Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) shape how parents nurture and how children grow, and that healing begins with us.

Healing Forward: Black Youth, Family, and Community Wellness Forum is a free, community-centered gathering designed to uplift, educate, and empower Black youth and families in Durham. Taking place on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 10 AM–2 PM at the North Carolina Central University (Miller-Morgan Building), this dynamic forum centers culturally grounded pathways to mental wellness through connection, expression, and collective care.

Families with youth ages 11–18 and local college students are invited to engage in powerful workshops, interactive breakout sessions, and an inspiring youth panel, “In Our Own Words: Youth Voices on Mental Health & Well-Being.” Together, we’ll explore the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), strengthen family and community connections, and equip both parents and youth with tools for emotional wellness and self-advocacy.

Hosted by EPiC in partnership with the UNC School of Education and NCCU College of Health Sciences, this affirming space reminds us: healing is possible and it happens in community.

    Summit Theme and Purpose

Theme: Justice Rising: Restoring, Repairing, and Resisting

This year’s Color of Education theme centers the belief that achieving justice requires individual and collective action. Justice Rising names a defining moment—one that calls for clarity, courage, and shared responsibility.

As inequities continue to be reinforced through policy, practice, and disinvestment, this theme centers the urgent work of restoring opportunity, repairing harm, and resisting forces that undermine justice. It affirms that resistance is not merely reactionary; it is principled, strategic, and necessary.

Grounded in the work of protecting students, strengthening communities, and advancing systems that serve all learners, the 2026 Summit calls participants to move with intention: to confront what must be repaired, reclaim what must be restored, and stand firm in resisting inequity in all its forms.
